About Us

What to know

Open Table, the Lutheran Episcopal Ministry at Northeastern, is an intentionally open and queer-affirming Christian community for Northeastern students of a variety of religious and non-religious backgrounds. We meet on Thursdays during the fall and spring semesters for contemplative worship, dinner, social justice and advocacy activities, and fun, relaxed community time. Be YOU with us!

Several lit candles are arranged on a wooden table with a banner reading "Open Table: The Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry at Northeastern."

History

Lutheran campus ministry at Northeastern University began in 1968, when the Rev. Arthur von Au, working out of an apartment in the Fenway neighborhood, served as chaplain at Northeastern. The NU ministry’s current incarnation started in 1997, when Joyce DeGreeff arrived, first as a Harvard Divinity School field education student, and then as a full-fledged campus minister and NU spiritual advisor.

The Lutheran and Episcopal campus ministries at Northeastern joined forces in 2006 to create a shared ministry.

What does it look like to be part of Open Table?

We gather on Thursdays from 5:45 to 7:45 pm during the fall and spring semester for faith programs, dinner, and other activities. In our time together, we share about our lives, support one another, and talk about how we live out our faith in these complicated days. Come when you are able; all are welcome!

Who supports this ministry?

Open Table is sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and by Lutheran Ministry in the Fenway (LMF), a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America . Donations from alumni/ae, students, parents, congregations, and friends are an important part of our funding. For more information on supporting this ministry, see the Lutheran Ministry in the Fenway website.

Open Table is a Northeastern University student group registered with the Northeastern Center for Spirituality, Dialogue, and Service (CSDS), where our chaplains also serve as Spiritual Advisors.
